Step 3Trim the derailleur step by step

Put the bike in a Work stand, with the battery charged, and switch the system to adjustment mode: a button on the derailleur, the shifter or the junction box, depending on the brand. Put the chain on a middle sprocket.

Each press now moves the derailleur by a small step without changing gear. Trim towards the larger sprockets if the chain hesitates to climb, towards the smaller ones if it rubs, then leave adjustment mode and test every gear.

  • Adjust

    Adjust the rear derailleur

Check the hanger, set the H and L limit screws, re-tension the cable, fine-tune indexing with the barrel adjuster, then the B-screw. Crisp, quiet shifting.

Chain wear, cog and chainring teeth, derailleur hanger and shifting — enough to know in fifteen minutes what needs replacing or adjusting.
